Oxycodone

Oxycodone is a opioid analgesic used in the management of moderate to severe pain when alternative treatments are not effective or are not tolerated. It acts on opioid receptors in the central nervous system to reduce the perception of pain and improve comfort in patients with acute or chronic pain requiring opioid therapy.

Oxycodone is available in several strengths and formulations, including immediate-release (IR) tablets for short-term pain relief and extended-release (ER) tablets for around-the-clock pain management. High-strength extended-release formulations, such as 80 mg, are generally reserved for opioid-tolerant patients because they carry a significantly increased risk of life-threatening respiratory depression in opioid-naïve individuals.

As with all opioid medications, oxycodone has the potential for dependence, misuse, addiction, overdose, and serious side effects. Patients should take the medication exactly as prescribed and should never take larger doses, use it more frequently, or continue taking it longer than directed. Extended-release tablets must be swallowed whole and should never be crushed, chewed, dissolved, or split, as doing so can rapidly release the entire dose and greatly increase the risk of overdose.

Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, headache, and itching. Serious adverse effects may include slowed or difficult breathing, severe allergic reactions, confusion, low blood pressure, and overdose. Patients should seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as severe breathing difficulty, loss of consciousness, or unresponsiveness.

Oxycodone may interact with alcohol, benzodiazepines, sedatives, muscle relaxants, and other medications that depress the central nervous system, increasing the risk of dangerous side effects. Patients should inform their healthcare provider of all medications and supplements they are taking before starting treatment.

This medication should be stored securely at room temperature in a safe location out of the reach of children and others for whom it was not prescribed. Unused medication should be disposed of through an approved medication take-back program or according to local guidelines to reduce the risk of accidental ingestion or misuse.
